Safe Sleep - What you need to know!

Ensuring safety and peace in your koala's sleep environment is crucial for us as parents. Here, I share with you ten pieces of advice that helped us create a safe sleep environment:

  • Back sleeping: Always place your baby on their back to sleep. This habit not only reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) but also promotes better airflow and safer sleep.

  • Firm sleep surface: We deliberately chose a firm and flat mattress for the crib. This made us feel secure knowing there were no unexpected gaps or spaces where our little one could get stuck.

  • Less is more: In the crib, we consciously avoided unnecessary items. It was a minimalist approach that ensured our baby slept without loose bedding or toys, minimizing potential hazards and creating a quiet sleep environment.

  • Temperature control: We always made sure the room temperature was between 21-23°C. Even on warmer days, we dressed our little ones in light, breathable layers to keep them cozy without overheating.

  • Smoke-free: A smoke-free sleep environment was a given for us. Our koalas' health came first, and we made every effort to create a clean and healthy atmosphere for them.

  • Room sharing: We spent the first few months with our children in the same room but not in the same bed. It was wonderful to have such a close bond without neglecting safety.

  • Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding was an important part of our sleep ritual. Not only for bonding but also because it's associated with a reduced risk of SIDS.

  • Using a pacifier: We also introduced a pacifier, which gave us an extra sense of security, especially in the first few months.

  • Supervised tummy time: Our koalas always had their supervised tummy time when awake and alert. It was a lovely way to support development while ensuring safe sleep.

  • Love and closeness: Most importantly, we made sure our baby always felt our love and closeness, both during the day and at night. This undoubtedly helped them feel secure and comforted.

With these little tips, you can create not only a safe sleep environment but also a loving atmosphere where your baby can grow and thrive.
